Company Background

The post-Apartheid Government has laid down the groundwork for the economic imancipation for historically disadvantaged individuals (HDIs) of the Republic of South Africa. Like any other developing economy, that of the Republic would expect emerging enterprises to immensely contribute towards the GDP of the country and assist in addressing the historical imbalances. Mpolokele Tau Holdings (MPK) is an emerging, 100% black-owned farming and veterinary services company.

MPK is carving its niche within the predominantly white-owned agricultural businesses that were assisted [by the then government], after the Great Depression of 1930 in South Africa . Said farmers benefited from the Natives Land Act (27 of 1913) by acquiring large portions of prime, arable land after the displacement of HDIs.

The enterprise has strategically formed partnerships with other emerging farmers for the establishment of economies of scale and for formation of trade linkages; moving on the footsteps of BRIC Africa economies that came together for a new order in leveraging against what the G7does.

About Company

The core business of the entity is Piggery production and Veterinary services. The structure of the enterprise consists of the following: Pig pens for 40 dry sows and 2 boars. The pens are divided into sections for housing sows in gestation, farrowing and lactating sows, weaners, porkers and finishers. Storage facility that packs 34 tonnes of grain feed, that optimizes pig growth. Farm house used by grounds man ,with medicine cabinet storage. Four permanent staff: one veterinarian, and 3 seasonal staff members.

MPK started operating in 2020 ,during the pandemic , with 5 porkers and has increased its breeding stock to 40 sows in 24 months. The increased number of breeding stock enables the enterprise to contribute towards pork production in the Ekurhuleni metro. The company has strategically partnered with other small scale farmers, that have between 10 to 30 sow units; whilst allowing these farmers to keep their autonomy and leverage on economies of scale for enterprise growth and better ROI. MPK is accessible to students who study animal production and veterinary science for their work related learning as per requirements of their studies.

Production Output

Although MPK farms intensively, which is considered by nature lovers as cruelty to animals; the livestock is only grain fed. The feeding programme is specifically formulated for the varying stages of production (weaners, finishers, farrowing sows) using the recommended quality and quantity of grain feed. This strategy enables a shorter slaughter-weight conversion period for carcasses between 70-100kg of quality P and O. Our in-house Vet is our number one quality assurance officer who guides the enterprises’ production systems to converge on the desired outcomes that the below acronym denotes. Meat quality, as graded by back-fat thickness/ livestock’s body condition score.
  • R/U ----- undernourished

  • O ------- 12-17mm fat
  • C -------- 23-27mm fat
  • U-------- 28-32mm fat
  • S ------- 32mm fat
On the current production scale of 56 000kg per annum, partnering with other farmers who have the capacity to produce between 14 000kg to 28 000kg per annum capacity; all these combined makes us to produce over 100 000 kg of pork per annum. The partnership with other emerging farmers is strategically done to leverage on economies of scale, maintaining farmer autonomy and up scaling the enterprises, to participate at a global scale.

Company Prospects

Some [Western] Nations have destabilized economies of “so called” developing countries, thus Africa has taken on Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want; which mainly aims to deal with the ravages of poverty . On a global arena, BRIC Africa runs parallel with Agenda 2063.

In as much as the key role players within the agricultural sector are counteracting the sustainability of emerging farmers through feed/grain costs and the price-by-grade of slaughtered carcass, our entity will reinvest its profits in the following activities:

  • Acquisition of land to accommodate more breeding stock and cultivate arable space for grain production .
  • Business expansion to allow pork value chain and agro processing.
  • Acquisition of technologically advanced feed milling equipment.
  • Acquisition of farrowing- and weaner-pen accessories to minimize gestational mortalities and improve living conditions.
  • Creation of job- and business opportunities by establishing local meat distribution vendors for quality meat at consumers doorstep.
  • Investing in technologically advanced system for offsite pig welfare management.
  • Increase meat processing capacity of quality meat products.
  • Provide skills training programme for youth recovering from substance abuse
